Other times, doctors removed muscles and ribs in an attempt to allow the lungs to further expand. Sometimes, balloons were surgically implanted in the lungs and filled with air. Within special rooms referred to as “sunrooms”, patient’s lungs were exposed to ultraviolet light in an attempt to slow the spread of bacteria. Torturous Treatmentĭesperate for a cure, TB patients underwent barbaric treatments. 20 years later there was no need for such a large hospital and the remaining patients were sent to Hazelwood Sanatorium in Louisville. The project was completed in 1926, just as TB cases began to tank thanks to the newfound antibiotic, streptomycin. With numbers that were simply unsustainable, construction on a five-story building with a capacity for over 400 people began in 1924. Soon the little clinic was packed to the brim with more than 140 people. Waverly Hills could accommodate 40 to 50 TB patients safely, but as the disease continued to rage that simply wasn’t enough. The result was a two-story wooden sanitorium that was open for business by 1910. The building was renovated beginning in 1908. Louisville needed somewhere to house the growing infected population and Waverly Hills seemed like the perfect place for them to rest, stay calm and get plenty of fresh air. Once diagnosed, TB patients need to be isolated from the general public. Pair this with chest pain and constant coughing(sometimes coughing up blood), it’s no surprise why people were terrified of contracting this disease. The general symptoms include feelings of weakness, weight loss, fever and night sweats. The hospital kept the name, but somewhere down the line the second “e” in Waverley was dropped. However, the building’s life as a schoolhouse was short-lived and in the early 1900s, the property was purchased by the Board of Tuberculosis Hospital. Hays was a fan of the name and followed suit naming his property Waverley Hill. Harris had a soft spot for Walter Scott’s Waverley novels and suggested they name the place “Waverley School”. After hiring Lizzie Lee Harris as a teacher, he opened a one-room schoolhouse on Pages Lane. Shortly after, Hays began plans to build and open a school for his daughters since there were no other schools nearby. Hays purchased the Waverly Hills lot in 1883.
